BBB Day 23

March 18

Hiked 3.5 miles

Time to move to another campground in Big Bend. Because of size warnings to drive to Chisos Basin, we went to the Cottonwood Campground instead.

The drive was magnificent with gorgeous rocks:

After lunch at Cottonwood (named for these poplar-like trees; in the foreground is a type of Acacia which fills the air with its scent):

…we headed to the Santa Elena Canyon Trail (thanks again to Marilyn!). It was very hot (probably hit 100) and the climb UP was hard, but the reward at the end in the cool of the shade by the river (and yes, the “mighty” Rio Grande again) was worth it:

A rare photo of the two of us (sweating):

It was a beautiful day, topped off with the view from my chair:

  1. We endured a heat wave when we were in Big Bend in Feb 2011 - temps hit over 100F daily. No matter, it's a beautiful landscape and great hiking. Thanks - I enjoyed the memories.
