Took the Gulf Breeze Parkway, ocean side, with rich (mostly) and some poor (trailer park-type) housing. LOTS of big stuff for sale: post Katrina and poor economy. There were a few resort towns with tchotchkes and tshirts!
Got to Grayton Beach State Park (Site 18) and got one of the two last sites for two days. Set up and knew we'd want to stay longer, so booked a third night (then sold out for weekend...we'll keep checking). We were welcomed by a flock of Cedar Waxwings feeding overhead.
What a gem; we back on to West Lake and see the dunes right from our "backyard".
Immediately met Mo and Tim next door from Ontario (from Ottawa and others from Lindsay!). Mo pointed out a female Cardinal across the road pecking at her image in the car's rear view mirrors then bashing against the window. Yikes. Apparently common so she offered shower caps to cover our mirrors (we used WalMart bags). A lesson in Florida!
We rode to the park's beach then in to Grayton Beach, a resort town minutes away. It's a funky town full of charming, older and grandiose newer clapboard houses and shops and restaurants.
Then back to the beach for some R&R:
Saw a HUGE Cottonmouth snake on our road (my screech prevented any picture taking!). Other than THAT, it was a spectacular day.

The MILES of driving and dodging weather are all worth it for views like this. It's why I prefer RVing and would never buy a place down here. Who wants an anchor around their ankles? Give me the open road.
